| There is no evidence that Robert REYNOLDS and Mary HATER ever married. This entry is made to link them to Mary's two illegitmate sons Henry and George. Robert is almost certainly Henry's father and is very likely George's as well. | |

| Henry was the illegitimate son of Mary HATER (HAYTER) and (probably) Robert REYNOLDS. He was christened at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Selling, Kent on 1834/07/27. It is not known exactly when he was born as this pre-dated the beginning of civil birth registration in England by several years. Given what follows, he may have been born more than the usual few days before christening. | |
| His christening entry in the church record is interesting. Most of the entries on the page were made by George J HILTON, the curate. The entry for Henry - as the son of Mary REYNOLDS - is made in the hand of John HILTON Vicar of St Nicholas Atwood (Sp?) in a noticably different hand. At a later time, George HILTON, presumably having returned from a temporary absence, has crossed out REYNOLDS and written in HATER. His hand writing is quite distinctive: in particular, the initial H is written in exactly the same way as his own name which appears on every entry he makes. | |
| A likely scenario is that Mary waits until George is absent and presents Henry to John for christening as the legitimate son of Robert REYNOLDS and herself. Being a visitor to the area and not knowing otherwise, John does as he is asked. When George returns, he sees the entry (is probably less than pleased with Marys duplicity) and changes it to what is probably the truth. | |
